Accepting our environmental responsibility

      Sanitary Waste Disposal

• Every day 2.5 million tampons are flushed down the toilet, along with 1.4 million sanitary towels and 700,000 panty liners.

• Almost 70% of all blockages in the sewerage system are attributed to "disposable" sanitary items.

• Sewage Related Debris (SRD), including tampons, sanitary towels and other feminine hygiene products, accounted for over 7% of all waste collected during the 2005 Beachwatch survey conducted by the Marine Conservation Society.

Our collective responsibility for the environment is something we at UK Hygiene take very seriously, and we are clear about the role we can play in creating a cleaner and safer environment for us all.

At UK Hygiene we adopt an informative and education based approach with our customers, to help them understand and act upon their own environmental responsibilities, including feminine hygiene and sanitary waste disposal

Sadly, a great proportion of sanitary waste now regularly litters our beaches and river banks, spoiling our natural environment and creating a potential health risk to humans and wildlife alike.

It may be surprising to learn that many sanitary items marked 'disposable' are in fact not disposable at all. And that contrary to popular belief, sanitary items and other feminine hygiene products should never be flushed down the toilet, because a tampon takes 6 months to biodegrade and a plastic sanitary towel liner lasts indefinitely.

It is these types of issues that we are committed to highlighting, in an attempt to make everyone aware of their responsibilities for our health and environment.
